In particular, high UV radiation (sunbathing, solarium) damages the skin to a high degree and leads not only to faster skin aging and more wrinkles in fair skin types, but also to an increased risk of skin cancer.

A rough distinction can be made between mimic, static and active wrinkles. Mimic wrinkles, such as frown lines or laugh lines, are caused by the movement of our facial muscles. Static wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds, on the other hand, appear independently of our facial expressions and are caused by sagging tissue and loss of moisture in the skin as part of the normal ageing process. Actinic wrinkles ("creases"), on the other hand, are caused by the dehydration and ageing of our skin.

As different as the causes of wrinkles are, the treatment methods used also differ: Botulinum (Botox), Filler or Skinbooster?

Botulinum

For mimic wrinkles such as frown lines, forehead wrinkles and laugh lines around the eyes (so-called crow's feet), treatment with botulinum toxin, also known under the brand name Botox, is suitable. The medication is available in powder form and is mixed with a sterile liquid for treatment. In addition to treating wrinkles, it is also used to treat increased sweating (hyperhidrosis), teeth grinding (bruxism) and chronic migraines. To treat wrinkles, botulinum toxin is injected into the relevant facial muscles with a fine needle so that they relax to prevent the active formation of wrinkles. In the correct dosage, botulinum toxin alleviates the mimic wrinkles without appearing unnatural or rigid. It is important that botulinum toxin is only used by trained and experienced specialists in plastic and aesthetic surgery in the correct dilution and in the right place. Otherwise, there is a risk that the medication will paralyze other, undesired muscles. As a precautionary measure, I recommend that my clients adhere to the following "2-day rule" after botulinum treatment: Avoid sport, overworking the head, massage of the treated facial region and sauna for 2 days.

Filler

Another option for treating wrinkles is to fill them with so-called fillers. The generic term "filler" covers filling materials such as hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxyapatite (e.g. Radiesse) or autologous fat. Nowadays, hyaluronic acid fillers are used most frequently. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of our body's own tissue and ensures the moisture, elasticity and firmness of the skin and tissue thanks to its ability to bind water. Hyaluronic acid fillers have a gel-like consistency. There is a wide range of different hyaluronic acid products with different strengths and viscosities, so that experienced plastic and aesthetic surgeons can select the right product for each treatment indication. For example, a deep wrinkle requires a firmer filler with a good "lifting capacity" and fine, superficial wrinkles require a "more fluid" product that can be easily distributed.

Hyaluronic acid also has another major advantage over other fillers: if necessary, it can be dissolved again with an antidote (so-called hyaluronidase).

Hyaluronic acid is also naturally broken down slowly by the body, so that the effect lasts between 6 months and 2 years. In addition to direct wrinkle injections, hyaluronic acid can also be used for gentle facial sculpting, such as accentuating cheekbones or correcting volume loss in the midface due to aging. In the right hands, natural treatment results can be achieved and you can be given a new freshness. Often less is more here!

Skinbooster

In contrast to fillers, skin boosters are not used to treat deep wrinkles or to add volume, but to moisturize the skin from the inside out and to reduce so-called actinic wrinkles ("creases"). Skin boosters are hyaluronic acid products and are used for deep hydration and skin rejuvenation. They are injected over large areas into the deeper layers of the skin, where they bind large amounts of moisture and thus achieve long-lasting hydration of the skin. By increasing the skin's elasticity, skin booster treatments can improve so-called "wrinkles" and the skin shines with a new freshness.

Especially popular is the PROFHILO® treatmentwhich acts like a "cream from within": PROFHILO® is a particularly pure hyaluronic acid which, in addition to the immediate moisturizing effect, boosts the body's own hyaluronic acid production and supports the natural formation of elastin and collagen. The result is a fresh, radiant complexion with a naturally beautiful glow.

As an experienced specialist in plastic & aesthetic surgery, I will be happy to advise you regarding Wrinkle treatment. Natural treatment results are especially close to my heart, which distinguishes me and is highly appreciated by many of my clients.

Book your consultation appointment online now, we look forward to seeing you!

       Book consultation appointment

Basel, September 5, 2023 The development of wrinkles has various causes and varies depending on the facial region.
