In the case of a disturbing double chin, the subcutaneous fat tissue can be reduced by means of liposuction under local anesthesia. The aim of this operation is to achieve a clear lower jaw line and a defined chin-neck angle.
The consultation
In an initial detailed consultation, Dr. Lüdi will take the time to address your concerns, analyze the findings together with you and advise you on treatment options. Furthermore, Dr. Lüdi will explain the surgical technique and the exact incision with the help of pictures and drawings and discuss the aftercare as well as possible risks and complications with you. It is very important to us that you are well informed about the procedure, that all open questions are answered and that your wishes are taken into account.
On the day of surgery
On the day of the operation, Dr. Lüdi prepares a photo documentation prior to the procedure and precisely draws the areas on the chin to be suctioned. You will then be prepared for the upcoming operation and accompanied to the operating room.
The operation
Double chin correction can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or in twilight sleep in our clinic's own operating room in Basel. At the beginning of the operation, the so-called tumescent solution (contains, among other things, local anesthetic and adrenaline) is injected into the fatty tissue. The tumescent solution has an anesthetic and vasoconstrictor effect and loosens the fat cells. After an exposure time of about 20 minutes, the excess fat cells in the chin area are gently suctioned out using a fine suction cannula. The incisions are only a few millimeters long and are usually hidden behind the earlobe. At the end of the operation, we apply a compression bandage.
Immediately after surgery
After the operation, you can recover from the procedure in our beautiful patient rooms with a view of the Rhine and will be looked after by our team. After another visit by Dr. Lüdi, you can be picked up by an accompanying person and return home the same day.
The aftercare
- After the procedure, you should wear a compression bandage for at least 1 week. Ideally, this compression bandage is worn only at night for another 3 weeks.
- We recommend a rest period of 4 weeks to support an optimal healing process. During this time, you should also refrain from sports.
- Pain intensity after surgery is generally moderate and well controlled with common analgesics.
- Scar care can be started from 3 weeks postoperatively.
Risks and complications
Double chin correction is a minimally invasive procedure and complications are very rare. There are the general surgical risks (e.g. bruising, wound healing problems, infection). After surgery, bruising and local swelling are to be expected, but these heal relatively quickly. A slight feeling of numbness also disappears in the first few weeks. The small scars are usually barely noticeable after the scar matures and are hidden behind the earlobe.
Costs
The costs for a double chin correction depend on your wishes, the type and extent of the operation, the type of anesthesia, and the materials required. During a consultation, Dr. Lüdi will put together a treatment tailored to your personal needs and provide you with an individual cost estimate.
Frequently asked questions
After the procedure, the treated areas are swollen and slightly painful due to pressure. However, the pain is bearable and can be well controlled with common painkillers.
After the bruises have healed and the swelling in the chin area has subsided, you will be able to socialize again after about 10 to 14 days. In the first week after the operation you should wear a compression bandage during the day and at night, then for another 3 weeks only at night.
After a double chin correction, you are usually not significantly restricted in your daily activities and can quickly return to work in the home office. As soon as you are also socially fit again and the swelling and any bruising have healed, you can also return to work (after about 10 to 14 days).
Once liposuctioned, fat cells are permanently removed and will not be regenerated. If your weight is stable, you can therefore assume a permanent result. However, in case of a strong weight gain, the volume of the remaining fat cells may also increase in the treated areas.
Minute scars remain in the area of the incisions, but are usually almost invisible and in most cases hidden behind the earlobes.
The costs for a double chin removal depend, among other things, on the type of operation and duration. During the consultation, we will be happy to provide you with an individual quote tailored to your needs.
Simona Lüdi, MD, will be happy to welcome you for a personal consultation at our clinic in Basel.
We look forward to seeing you.
