Botulinum, an active ingredient known primarily from the treatment of wrinkles, can also be used to combat heavy sweating. In this case, the drug is injected with very fine needles into the skin area affected by excessive sweating (e.g. armpit region, hands, feet). Botulinum reduces the release of sweat by exerting its effect directly on the sweat glands and specifically blocking the nerve impulses that cause sweat secretion.
The effect starts after approx. 3 to 4 days and is fully developed after 10 to 14 days at the latest. The duration of the effect varies from person to person; as a rule, the effect lasts 4 to 6 months. After that, the original sweating resumes. However, many patients experience a longer duration of effect, especially after multiple botulinum injections.
