Breast Implant Replacement or Removal in Basel

Breast augmentation using breast implants remains one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries. A scheduled breast implant replacement every 10 to 15 years, as was previously recommended, is no longer absolutely necessary today. However, follow-up surgeries—for example, due to capsular contracture—may become necessary over time.

Since a breast implant is a foreign body, the body naturally encases it in a thin connective tissue capsule. In certain cases, this capsule may thicken over several years, a condition known as capsular contracture. This can lead to symptoms such as pain, hardening, and a distortion of the breast shape; in such cases, the capsule should be removed (capsulectomy) and the implants replaced.

If the breasts have become saggy due to, among other things, changes in the body and breasts caused by aging, weight fluctuations, or following pregnancy or breastfeeding, a breast lift should be performed in conjunction with the breast implant replacement. If the patient does not wish to have new implants inserted, a Breast lift with or without volume replacement, with Autologous fat may be indicated in order to restore an aesthetically pleasing breast shape following breast implant removal.

Consultation regarding the removal or replacement of breast implants

As a plastic surgeon, Dr. Lüdi specializes in breast surgery and will be happy to advise you personally on a woman-to-woman basis at her clinic in Basel.

Before replacing or removing breast implants, two in-depth consultations with Dr. Lüdi typically take place. It is very important to us that you are well-informed about the procedure, that all your questions are answered, and that your wishes are taken into account. In certain cases, additional diagnostic tests—such as an ultrasound or MRI—may be necessary before surgery. Dr. Lüdi will discuss with you the surgical technique, the exact incision site and placement of the breast implant, potential risks and complications, as well as postoperative care.

Choosing Breast Implants

When replacing breast implants, we usually recommend choosing a slightly larger implant due to the pre-stretching of the breast tissue envelope and the removal of capsular tissue. When switching to a smaller breast implant, an additional Streamlining necessary. We use only the most advanced, highest-quality breast implants from reputable companies.

The Process of Removing or Replacing Breast Implants

On the day of surgery

On the day of the operation, Dr. Lüdi prepares a photo documentation before the operation and makes the markings on the breast. You will then be prepared for the upcoming operation and accompanied to the operating room.

The Surgery—Implant Replacement or Implant Removal

Breast implant replacement can be performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia at our clinic in Basel. Whenever possible, we use the existing scars as access points. Depending on the case, it may be necessary to extend the incision or make an additional incision for a breast lift. This will be discussed with you before the surgery.

The breast implant and, depending on the indication, all or part of the capsule are removed. A new implant is then inserted, or, if necessary, the implant volume is replaced with the patient’s own fat.

In the case of an additional autologous fat transfer, fat is harvested via liposuction from another area of the body—such as the abdomen, flanks, or thighs—processed, and then injected into the breast through small incisions using a cannula.

Immediately after the removal or replacement of breast implants

After your surgery, you can recover in our beautiful patient rooms with a view of the Rhine, where our team will take care of you. After another checkup with Dr. Lüdi, you can have a companion pick you up and return home the same day.

The aftercare

  • The first follow-up visit by Dr. Lüdi takes place the very next day.
  • For 6 weeks, you should wear a well-fitting sports bra during the day and at night.
  • We recommend a recovery period of 6 weeks to support optimal healing. This means that during this time, you should avoid exercise, carrying or lifting heavy objects, and sleeping on your stomach. Sports such as rock climbing, scuba diving, golf, tennis, and PowerPlate should even be avoided for the first 3 months after surgery to support optimal healing of the breast implant. You should also avoid wearing a push-up bra for 3 months after surgery.
  • Pain intensity after surgery is generally moderate and well controlled with common analgesics.
  • Scar care can be started from 3 weeks postoperatively.

Risks and Complications Associated with Breast Implant Replacement

In principle, any breast surgery carries certain risks; however, breast implant replacement is generally a low-risk procedure, and complications are very rare. The risks and complications associated with breast implant replacement are the same as those of the initial surgery.

In addition to general surgical risks (e.g., bruising, impaired wound healing, postoperative bleeding, infection, scarring issues), breast implants carry a certain risk of capsular contracture. Treatment is only necessary if symptoms are present.

During the consultation, Dr. Lüdi will discuss the possible risks and complications with you in detail and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Costs for breast implant replacement or removal

The cost of breast implant replacement or removal depends on your preferences, the type and extent of the surgery, and the materials required.

During a consultation, Dr. Lüdi will develop a treatment plan tailored specifically to your needs and provide you with a personalized cost estimate.

As a rule, health insurance covers a portion of the surgical costs (implant removal and capsulotomy) following prior approval of coverage, provided there is a medical indication (capsular fibrosis, implant rupture). However, the cosmetic portion of the surgery—including the costs of new implants, a breast lift, or autologous fat transfer—must always be paid for by the patient herself.
